Five Common Types of Tendon Tears

There are several types of tendon tears that can lead to immobility or severe discomfort for a patient.

One: An Achilles Tendon Rupture

An Achilles tendon rupture happens frequently in a foot, especially during sports that include running or jumping. Older individuals are also more likely to incur this type of injury due to natural wear and tear to this tendon.

Two: A Biceps Tendon Injury

A bicep injury involves the arm because this tendon attaches the bicep muscle to the elbow and shoulder. When a tear occurs in this tendon, an individual will experience weakness in their arm from the shoulder to the hand.

Three: A Rotator Cuff Tear

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons located near the shoulder, and if a tendon tears, then an individual experiences discomfort in their neck, back, and shoulder region.

Four: A Patellar Tendon Tear

The patellar tendon is located in the leg and is responsible for attaching the kneecap to the shinbone. This is another common tendon injury that typically occurs during contact sports, and it is often a complex problem because the tendon can tear partially or completely.

Five: A Peroneal Tendon Injury

A peroneal tendon tears occur in a foot, and in most cases, only one foot is involved. This condition is caused by trauma, overuse or repetitive motion.

What Are Tendons?

A tendon is a form of connective tissue that attaches a muscle to a bone. This thick and fibrous tissue is made of collagen, elastin and small amounts of other materials. In some cases, a tendon is attached directly to a joint, but tendons also connect to other areas of bones. The majority of tendon tears occur near to a joint while someone is participating in a sport or a strenuous job.

What Are the Symptoms of a Tendon Tear?

Certain types of tendon tears will lead to immediate immobility in a limb. Some tendon injuries cause pain, swelling or a burning sensation, especially when someone tries to use the injured body part. It is important to seek medical assistance as quickly as possible after a tendon tear in order to begin treatment that can reduce discomfort and additional damage. A physician can prescribe medication to eliminate the pain and inflammation from this injury, but a surgical procedure is often indicated to repair a tendon tear.
